“Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, today (Tuesday, 17 December 2024), on the Hermon ridge, held an assessment with the Defense Minister, IDF Chief-of-Staff, the Head of Northern Command and the ISA Director.
“The Prime Minister reviewed the IDF deployment in the area and set guidelines for the future.”
Defense Minister Yisrael Katz: “Mount Hermon is the eyes of the State of Israel to identify threats near and far. Here we are looking at Hezbollah in Lebanon, on the left at Damascus – and opposite we see the State of Israel. The IDF is here to protect the communities of the Golan Heights and the citizens of the State of Israel from any threat, from the most important place that can be done.”
According to reporter, Elchanan Mazuz, Ch. 14 news: The defense minister said, “We will be here for as long as necessary. Our presence here at the peak of Mount Hermon strengthens security and adds a dimension of observation and deterrence on Hezbollah's strongholds in the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon, as well as deterrence against the rebels in Damascus, who claim to present a moderate face but are among the most extreme Islamic streams.”
“The defense minister added that ‘even in the age of long-range weapons, height and grip are of great significance. We will not allow a return to a situation of threats similar to those of October 7 on the borders of the State of Israel.’”
Reuters report: “Netanyahu is on his way to Cairo for talks on a ceasefire in Gaza.
“An agreement is likely to be signed in the coming days.”
Update: Prime Minister Office Spokesman, Omer Dostri, denied the report, in a tweet: “Despite the wave of rumors - Prime Minister Netanyahu is not in Cairo, and there's nothing new in the matter of Eli Cohen, May his memory be as a blessing.”
