Update, Tuesday, Dec. 10th:
IDF Spokesperson:
“The Commander of the Israeli Air Force, Major General Tomer Bar, conducted an operational investigation yesterday (Monday) regarding the incident in which an unmanned aerial vehicle struck a building in the city of Yavne.
“The investigation revealed that the hostile UAV, launched from Yemen, was identified as a suspicious target near other non-hostile aircraft. A combat helicopter and defense systems were prepared to intercept the UAV.
“However, the UAV was not intercepted due to concerns that it might be a civilian aircraft, as well as a lack of continuous tracking.
“It was further determined that the failure to activate alerts was a mistake, resulting from the fact that the UAV was not classified as a hostile aircraft.
“The Air Force Commander accepted the investigation’s findings and concluded that the Air Force failed in this incident by not providing protection and alerts to Israeli citizens.
“The Major General stated that this was a complex event in a civilian area and emphasized that the alert policy should be broadened, even in cases where there is no definitive classification of an aircraft as hostile.”
An exploding UAV struck a residential building in Yavne Monday morning, causing damage to a penthouse apartment.
There were no physical injuries in the attack on the city, located about 20 minutes south of Tel Aviv.
Update: The IDF now assesses that the aircraft - which entered Israeli airspace untracked - was launched by Houthi terrorists in Yemen.
